Gemological Institute of America
The Gemological Institute of America (the GIA) is perhaps the most well known gemological institute in the world. The GIA created the original grading system still being used today. GIA created the system in 1931 to create a unified method to describe the 4C’s. GIA created the first grading reports in 1953
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is a nonprofit institute dedicated to research and education in the field of gemology and the jewelry arts. GIA's mission is to protect all buyers and sellers of gemstones by setting and maintaining the standards used to evaluate gemstone quality. The institute does so through research, gem identification and diamond grading services and a variety of educational programs. Through its world-renowned library and subject experts, GIA acts as a resource of gem and jewelry information for the trade, the public and worldwide media outlets.
In 1953 the GIA developed its International Diamond Grading System and the Four Cs (cut, clarity, color, and carat weight) as a standard to compare and evaluate the quality of diamonds.
American Gem Society
The American Gem Society (AGS) is a trade association of retail jewelers, independent appraisers, suppliers, and selective industry members, which was founded in 1934 by Robert M. Shipley. Members are held to a high code of ethics with emphasis on consumer protection and education.
The American Gem Society Laboratories (AGSL), was founded in 1996. Diamond grading is the specialty of the American Gem Society Laboratories and the Society has developed its own cut, color, and clarity standards.
The American Gem Society pioneered the cut grade and is still considered the definitive report for cut.

Gem Certification and Assurance Lab
The Gem Certification and Assurance Lab (GCAL) was founded in 2001is a very sought after grading report for Lab-Grown diamonds and offers a unique suite of certification, identification, valuation, and forensic services for diamonds, gemstones, and jewelry. They are recognized leaders in the field of Laboratory-Grown diamond grading.
Every diamond certificate is also accompanied by a Gemprint, which is the optical fingerprint of a diamond, for registration and recovery, and for positive identification.
International Gemological Institute
The International Gemological Institute (IGI) Established in 1975, IGI is the largest independent gemological laboratory worldwide.
IGI provides independent grading reports, colored stone reports, identification and appraisal reports, diamond authentication and attestations of origin, and laser inscription services.
Gemological Institute of America
The Gemological Institute of America has recently vastly expanded their Lab-Grown reporting and will quickly become one of the most desired reports for Lab Grown diamonds.
